Marex Marine and Risk Consultancy (Marex) is the trading name of Marex Marine Services Limited. Marex was formed in 1998, in response to a requirement for safety case authorship, which was introduced under the Cullen Report, following the Piper Alpha platform disaster. Marex now comprises a safety/risk department and a marine department. From its offices in central Aberdeen, it coordinates a network and staff of marine, risk and survey professionals undertaking projects worldwide for the offshore oil and gas market, shipping, ports and renewables sectors. It draws on the skills of its Master Mariners, risk specialists, safety and marine engineers, naval architects, mathematicians, and fishing industry experts. The departments carry out a comprehensive portfolio of marine and risk consultancy support services.
Marex is recognised as a leading provider of safety cases, having delivered well over 200 to date. The worldwide market has opened up to Marex as more coastal states now have a requirement for drilling companies to have safety cases. This is coupled with the fact that the oil majors are requesting drilling companies to have safety cases for their units even if there is no coastal state legislative requirement.
Over the years, Marex has become a key resource for Operators and shipping companies to call on and count upon for its Marine expertise and personnel to work closely to support their assets, whilst also supporting ports as their independent Designated Person in compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code.

Captain Ian McDougall is a qualified and experienced Master Mariner with an extensive range of skills and experience. He served on a variety of vessels engaged in worldwide trade before entering the offshore industry where he spent nine years on anchor-handlers, PSVs and diving vessels, four years of which were as Night Master latterly on Stena Seaspread. Ian spent several years as an Aberdeen Harbour Pilot during which he developed a successful non-marine related business. He subsequently returned to the marine field as a technical specialist and joined MAREX in the role of Marine Team Leader overseeing rig moves and other marine operations for major operators. He took over as Managing Director and major shareholder in March 2007. In addition to running the company, and overseeing risk projects, Ian heads up the Marine team and actively supports clients with CMIDs, OVIDS, audits and inspections etc.
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that over the festive period, after a short illness, Ian McDougall, Managing Director and major stakeholder of Marex, passed away. It was Ian's wish for Marex to continue, grow and prosper and, accordingly, it shall do so, led by its strong management team. (31-12-2018)
