Ballast Water Management Plans (BWMP)

As the legal requirement for vessels to carry an approved Ballast Water Management Plan gathers momentum, so to does the number of companies requesting MAREX to write a BWMP for existing vessels and vessels currently under construction.

Not all countries have ratified the IMO convention yet as there is still some discussion regarding ballast treatment technology. Once sufficient states have ratified the convention (equating to 35% of the worlds tonnage) a BWMP will be mandatory (currently 27 states have started the ratification process, equating to over 25% of the worlds tonnage). Some states have already decided to adopt and enforce the convention. A BWMP is required for operations in the following countries:

  • • Australia
  • • Brazil
  • • Unites States of America
  • • New Zealand
  • • Israel (Red Sea)
  • • Canada
  • • Chile

The convention applies to all ships including semi-submersibles. All ships will be required to carry out ballast water and sediment management and have onboard an approved BWMP and ballast water records.

MAREX have written BWMP’s for most types of offshore vessel, including new build drill-ships. The advantage of using MAREX to provide a BWMP is our experience, efficiency, quality and, without doubt, cost (particularly when compared to Classification Societies).

We do not require a ship visit as we can perform all the work from our Aberdeen office. The plan is developed in consultation with those who are responsible for the ballasting operations. Once reviewed by the vessel management we arrange for Class approval.

All our BWMP take into account:

  • • Bending Moments
  • • Shear Forces
  • • Torsional Stresses
  • • Stability Margins
  • • Free Surface
  • • Tank Venting
  • • Draft
  • • Propeller Immersion
  • • Crew Safety
  • • Weather Windows
